Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, visited Japan and participated in an official signing ceremony in Tokyo on March 6, 2026, marking an important step toward strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the visit, Carney held talks with Japanese political leader Sanae Takaichi, where both sides discussed expanding cooperation in economic security, defense, and advanced technologies. The meeting reflected the growing strategic importance of cooperation between Canada and Japan amid global economic and security challenges.
Following the discussions, the two leaders announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership designed to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors. The agreement aims to enhance cooperation in trade, energy development, critical minerals supply, and emerging technologies, all of which are increasingly vital for modern economies.
Defense cooperation was also a key focus of the talks. Both countries agreed to strengthen their military collaboration by expanding joint exercises and improving intelligence and cybersecurity information sharing. Officials emphasized that stronger defense ties would help address regional and global security concerns.
The agreement also includes initiatives to improve crisis response mechanisms, enhance coast guard coordination, and strengthen efforts to combat illegal fishing activities in the North Pacific region. These measures are expected to contribute to greater maritime security and regional stability.
With nearly $40 billion in annual bilateral trade between the two nations, Canada and Japan highlighted the importance of building resilient supply chains and reinforcing economic partnerships. Both leaders expressed their commitment to expanding trade and investment opportunities while ensuring stability in an increasingly complex global environment.
