Bursa, Türkiye — November 18, 2025 — A newly uncovered section of an ancient floor mosaic in Bursa’s İznik district has revealed extraordinary artistic and historical details, shedding new light on the cultural richness of the Late Roman and early Byzantine periods. The mosaic, originally discovered 11 years ago during routine sewerage work, continues to surprise archaeologists as excavations expand.
The newly revealed section features a vivid scene of a seated woman holding a basket of fruit, symbolizing abundance, fertility, and the agricultural prosperity of ancient İznik—historically known as Nicaea. Another striking figure depicts a woman whose face is believed to personify Lake İznik, her hair adorned with crab-claw-shaped pins representing the lake’s aquatic life and its deep cultural significance.
Surrounding these central figures, archaeologists have identified additional human and possibly mythological characters, each crafted with expressive detail and vibrant coloration. The mosaic also includes intricate geometric patterns and three-dimensional optical motifs, demonstrating the advanced craftsmanship of mosaic artisans from nearly two millennia ago.
Researchers believe the mosaic once formed part of a large architectural structure—possibly a villa or ceremonial hall—reflecting Nicaea’s importance as a political, artistic, and cultural center in antiquity. Ongoing excavations aim to uncover more scenes and architectural context, with plans for conservation and public presentation as İznik’s cultural tourism initiatives expand.
