Bitlis, Turkiye — Icicles have formed along the Deliklitas rock formations in Bitlis as freezing temperatures intensified following heavy snowfall across the region. Thick layers of ice now cling to the jagged cliffs, creating dramatic natural ice sculptures visible along the roadside.
The prolonged cold spell has disrupted daily life throughout Bitlis, with residents facing hazardous travel conditions and reduced mobility in several areas. Roads have become slippery, prompting authorities to issue warnings to drivers, particularly on mountainous routes where ice accumulation remains severe. Snow removal and salting operations are ongoing as teams work to keep major transportation routes open.
Deliklitas, located at the 18th kilometer of the Bitlis–Diyarbakir highway, is a well-known rock formation that attracts attention during winter months. Water seeping from the cliffs freezes almost instantly in sub-zero temperatures, but this year’s extreme cold has resulted in unusually large and dense icicles, drawing the interest of locals and travelers despite challenging weather conditions.
Harsh winter weather has also affected infrastructure and public services across the region, with occasional transportation disruptions and increased demand for heating. Meteorological authorities state that the cold conditions are part of a broader winter system affecting eastern and southeastern Turkiye, bringing heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
While the icy formations have created striking winter scenery, officials continue to urge caution, warning of the dangers posed by falling icicles and icy roads as the cold weather persists.
