Participants gathered to compete in the annual Build Your Own Boat (BYOB) race at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 11, 2025. The event, now a beloved autumn tradition at the center, attracts a diverse mix of teams made up of engineers, college and high school students, outdoor enthusiasts, Scout groups, corporate teams, and hobbyists. Each group is challenged to design and build handmade watercraft using unconventional, upcycled, or recycled materials—such as cardboard, plastic barrels, wood scraps, metal parts, and fabric—before putting their creations to the test on the whitewater rapids.
In the days and weeks leading up to the event, many teams spend hours conceptualizing their boats, focusing not only on buoyancy and maneuverability but also on originality and showmanship. Some groups lean toward humor and spectacle, crafting boats shaped like animals, mythical creatures, or household objects, while others take a more technical approach, emphasizing engineering problem-solving and structural integrity.
On race day, spectators lined the course, filling wooden decks, bridges, and riverside seating areas to watch the boats launch one after another into the churning water. Family members, friends, and visitors cheered competitors as they attempted to navigate obstacles, steer through fast-moving channels, and stay afloat amid splashes and occasional wipeouts. Announcers provided commentary throughout the event, highlighting standout designs, near misses, and unexpected successes.
The atmosphere was festive and community-driven, with food trucks, live music, kids’ activities, and vendor booths scattered around the center. Volunteers and staff members from the Whitewater Center ensured safety on the water, assisting teams whose boats capsized or got stuck along the course. Awards were typically given not only for speed or successful completion of the rapids but also for categories like Most Creative Design, Best Use of Recycled Materials, Crowd Favorite, and Most Dramatic Sinking.
The BYOB race has become a highlight of the center’s fall event calendar, blending outdoor recreation with friendly rivalry, environmental awareness, and hands-on design challenges. Beyond the competition itself, the event fosters teamwork and problem-solving, encouraging participants to think sustainably while having fun. For many local residents and returning teams, the race is a yearly opportunity to showcase ingenuity, celebrate community engagement, and enjoy one of Charlotte’s most vibrant outdoor venues.
