Who Is a Healthy Person?

Have you ever paused to wonder what it truly means to be healthy? Is health simply the absence of illness? Is it found in the person who exercises daily, or in someone who eats only nutritious meals? Could it be the one who sleeps soundly through the night? Each of these answers might seem correct on its own, but health is far more complex than any single definition.

To understand this better, imagine a table with four legs. If one leg is unstable, the entire table wobbles. What do we do in that situation? We look closely to see which leg is out of balance. Sometimes, all it takes is slipping a small piece of paper under that leg to restore stability. A healthy person, too, is like that balanced table.

Each leg of the table represents a different dimension of our being. The first leg is mental health, which includes the thoughts that constantly repeat and disturb us, often tying us to the past or dragging us into the future. The second is emotional health, shaped by suppressed or overwhelming feelings that weigh us down. The third leg is our physical health—pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, or lack of movement are signs that this part may be unstable. Finally, there is spiritual health, the search for meaning, inner peace, and a deeper connection with life itself.

If one of these legs falters, the entire balance of health is disrupted. This is where a concept I hold dear becomes essential: Connection before Correction.

We live in a time when there is a constant rush to correct. We try to correct ourselves, our children, our partners, even politics and the world around us. Yet, without first establishing connection, correction quickly loses its meaning. How can we truly fix something if we don’t pause and ask: “Which leg of my table is wobbling?”

It is important to remember that what we often label as “illness” is not always an enemy. More often, it is the body’s way of saying: “One of my legs needs support.”

So I leave you with a question: Which leg of your table needs support?
