Van Cat Preservation Efforts Increase Purebred Kitten Numbers in Türkiye

Van cats are being carefully protected and bred at the Van Yuzuncu Yil University Van Cat Research and Application Center, where specialists continue their efforts to preserve the breed’s unique genetic traits and increase the number of purebred kittens born each year. Located in the eastern province of Van, the center plays a key role in safeguarding one of the region’s most iconic animal symbols.

Housed in a specially designed “Cat Villa” on the university campus, the animals live in a controlled environment that allows researchers and trained caretakers to monitor breeding conditions, nutrition, health, and genetic lineage. The project focuses not only on increasing the population but also on ensuring that new generations reflect the breed’s original characteristics.

The Van cat is widely regarded as one of Türkiye’s most treasured native breeds. Recognizable for its soft white coat, bushy tail, and graceful, lion-like walk, the Van cat is particularly famous for its striking eye colors. Many display heterochromia — one blue eye and one amber eye — a feature that has become a defining symbol of the breed.

Officials at the research center emphasize that maintaining genetic purity is a priority. Careful selection and supervised breeding programs aim to prevent crossbreeding while strengthening desirable traits associated with the original Van cat lineage. Veterinary teams regularly assess the animals’ health and development to ensure optimal living conditions.

Beyond breeding, the facility also works to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting regional animal heritage. Educational initiatives highlight the historical and cultural significance of the Van cat, which has long been associated with the Lake Van region and remains an emblem of local identity.

As preservation efforts continue, researchers hope to increase both the annual number of kittens and the broader population of purebred Van cats. Through scientific oversight and dedicated care, the center aims to secure the future of this distinctive breed for generations to come.
