Hagia Sophia is one of the most important historical landmarks in the world and a defining symbol of Istanbul. Built in 537 AD during the Byzantine Empire, it was originally constructed as a cathedral and stood as the largest church in the world for nearly a thousand years.

In 1935, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a museum, representing a new chapter that emphasized shared cultural heritage. In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque, continuing its long history of transformation while remaining open to visitors from around the world.
Architecturally, Hagia Sophia is famous for its massive dome, intricate mosaics, and the unique coexistence of Christian and Islamic elements. Few buildings in the world reflect such a layered history so visibly within a single space.
Today, Hagia Sophia stands as a powerful symbol of Türkiye’s role as a bridge between East and West, past and present, faith and culture — making it one of the most visited and meaningful landmarks on earth.
