In the Sarıkamış district of Kars, the construction of meaningful snow sculptures commemorating the soldiers who lost their lives during the Sarıkamış Operation has officially begun. Created in memory of thousands of Ottoman soldiers who were martyred 111 years ago in the unforgiving winter conditions of the Allahuekber Mountains, the project serves as a powerful reminder of one of the most tragic and heroic chapters in Turkish history.
The commemorative initiative is being carried out under the leadership of the Kars Governorship and the Sarıkamış District Governorate, with academic coordination provided by Assoc. Dr. Muhammet Hanifi Zengin, a faculty member of the Kazım Karabekir Technical Sciences Vocational School at Kafkas University (KAÜ). A dedicated team of skilled artists, academics, and students are working meticulously to transform snow into lifelike sculptures that depict the struggle, endurance, and sacrifice of the soldiers who perished during the campaign.
Each sculpture reflects moments of hardship and bravery, symbolizing the patriotism and resilience of the soldiers who faced extreme cold, hunger, and exhaustion. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the artists continue their work with great care, ensuring that every detail conveys respect and historical authenticity.
Beyond its artistic value, the project aims to preserve the collective memory of the Sarıkamış martyrs and pass this awareness on to younger generations. The snow sculptures have already begun to draw the attention of visitors and local residents, turning the area into a striking open-air memorial where history, art, and remembrance come together.
Organizers hope that the project will not only honor the fallen soldiers with dignity but also raise public awareness about the Sarıkamış Operation, strengthen national unity, and encourage reflection on the sacrifices made for the homeland.
