Explosion Sparks Massive Fire at Auto Body Shop in New Jersey

Firefighters responded to a massive five-alarm blaze in Hillside, New Jersey, on October 15, 2025, following a powerful explosion that erupted at an auto body shop along North Broad Street. The initial blast, which witnesses described as “shaking the ground like an earthquake,” ignited an intense fire that quickly spread to several neighboring businesses, including a warehouse, a tire repair shop, and a small restaurant. Within minutes, thick black smoke blanketed the area, visible from miles away and prompting hundreds of calls to emergency services.

Multiple fire departments from surrounding municipalities — including Elizabeth, Newark, and Union — rushed to assist Hillside firefighters in battling the inferno. Crews worked for hours to bring the flames under control, deploying aerial ladder trucks and establishing multiple water lines to prevent the fire from reaching nearby residential blocks. The response was complicated by strong winds, which caused embers to jump across rooftops and reignite smaller fires throughout the block.

Authorities temporarily closed several major intersections and diverted traffic away from the scene, while local police officers went door-to-door urging nearby residents and shop owners to evacuate as a precaution. Emergency shelters were set up at a nearby community center for displaced individuals, and Red Cross teams provided assistance to those affected by the blaze.

Witnesses reported hearing a deafening boom moments before the explosion, followed by a series of smaller blasts that may have been caused by flammable materials inside the auto body shop, such as paint thinners, fuel tanks, and compressed gas cylinders. Fire officials confirmed that the intensity of the fire was heightened by the presence of these materials, which are common in automotive repair facilities.

Emergency medical teams and paramedics remained on standby throughout the night amid concerns about possible injuries to workers or first responders. Several firefighters were treated on-site for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, but officials have not yet released information about civilian casualties. Hospitals in the surrounding area were placed on alert to receive potential patients from the scene.

Local utility companies quickly arrived to shut off gas and electricity in the surrounding area to prevent further explosions or electrical hazards. Environmental teams from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) were also dispatched to monitor air quality and assess potential contamination from burning chemicals and debris.

As dawn broke, charred vehicles, twisted metal, and smoldering debris marked the aftermath of the disaster. Fire marshals and law enforcement officials began an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the initial explosion, examining security camera footage and interviewing witnesses. Preliminary reports suggest the blast may have originated near a storage area containing flammable solvents, but authorities have not yet confirmed the source.

The incident has drawn widespread attention throughout the region due to the scale of destruction and the disruption to local businesses. Hillside’s mayor issued a statement praising first responders for their swift and coordinated action, noting that without their efforts, the fire could have spread even further. “Our firefighters showed extraordinary bravery under extremely dangerous conditions,” the mayor said. “We are grateful that the situation was brought under control before more lives and properties were lost.”

By late evening, fire crews continued to douse remaining hotspots as investigators began assessing structural damage and collecting debris samples for forensic analysis. Officials are urging residents to avoid the area as cleanup and safety inspections continue in the coming days.
