French Unions protest against SHEIN’s first store opening in Paris

French labor unions and activists staged a protest in front of the BHV Marais department store in central Paris on October 10, 2025, in opposition to the planned opening of the first SHEIN retail store in the French capital. The demonstration drew dozens of union members, workers’ rights advocates, environmental campaigners, and local residents, all holding banners and placards expressing concern over labor practices, fast fashion, and the environmental impact associated with the Chinese e-commerce giant.

Protesters criticized SHEIN for what they describe as exploitative labor practices in its supply chain, including low wages, unsafe working conditions, and excessive reliance on cheap manufacturing in developing countries. Many participants also raised concerns about the environmental footprint of fast fashion, emphasizing the rapid production cycles and excessive textile waste linked to companies like SHEIN. Chanting slogans and engaging with passersby, demonstrators called on French authorities and the public to consider ethical consumption and support sustainable alternatives.

Union representatives delivered speeches highlighting the potential threat to local retailers and workers, arguing that the arrival of large international fast fashion brands could undermine fair labor standards in the country. Some demonstrators staged symbolic actions, including mock “garment dumps” and art installations showcasing the environmental impact of mass-produced clothing.

The protest took place amid heightened public debate in France and across Europe regarding the regulation of fast fashion brands and their social and environmental responsibilities. French authorities had coordinated with local law enforcement to ensure safety and manage traffic around the busy Marais district, which saw a mix of shoppers, tourists, and protesters throughout the day.

Despite the opposition, SHEIN confirmed plans to proceed with the store opening, marketing it as an opportunity to reach French consumers directly and provide a combination of affordable fashion and digital shopping experiences. The protest, however, underscores ongoing tensions between multinational fashion retailers and labor, consumer, and environmental advocacy groups, highlighting broader societal discussions on sustainable practices and workers’ rights in the global fashion industry.
